During one of the warmer parts of the summer Oscar and I made lego shaped frozen yoghurt. Just because we could really. We had it for snack when his friends came to play. (This makes me super mummy!) It’s not an original idea. It’s been around blogland a lot this summer.

We mixed my soya youghurt with raspberries. Oscar just used petit filous in his. Then we filled the lego ice cube trays and ta-dah! Easiest boy based entertainment ever.

Before Laura returned to England, Ruth suggested that we go to Tulley’s Farm and pick our own strawberries. Laura immediately agreed, asking if we might make jam with the berries we picked. Thus the plan was born.

With Oz and Emily in tow, we headed out to pick strawberries. As its near the end of strawberry season, we worried the pickings might be slim, but we managed to find a number of them anyways.


Once home,we cleaned the berries and prepared to make jam. Apples are added to the jam to help it set.

Our recipe calls for equal parts apple, berries and double sugar. We used 1lb 6oz of each berry and 2lb 12oz of sugar. You also need the juice of two fresh lemons.

Step 1: Wash and cut fruit.


Step 2: Add apples to a pot with some water (maybe 2 cups?) – Basically about half of them were covered. Put the berries in a separate pot, with no added water – although the bottom should be damp. Add the lemon juice to each pot (one lemon per pot). The lemons are high in pectin and help the jam set.


Step 3: Cook berries and apples until they are soft and can be further mashed. We used a potato masher. You should probably mash them a bit better than we did!


Step 4: Pour berries into apples and then once the mixture is boiling, add sugar. Continue cooking.


Step 5: While the fruit-sugar mixture is cooking, soak your jars in HOT BOILING water. The jars MUST be extremely hot in order to seal properly. A dish towel should also soak in the water as well.


Step 6: When the mixture thickens and a “skin” begins to form, it is time to pour the jam. Pour the jam into jars and put the lids on them. You need to fill them to the very top, otherwise you risk it molding before you use it. Plus this helps it seal better.
BE VERY VERY CAREFUL, THE JARS AND MIXTURE ARE VERY VERY HOT!

Step 7: Cover the jars with the dish towel that was soaking in the hot water, and let sit for 24 hours.


Step 8: Check that your jam has set. If not, you can pour it back into the pot, re-boil and try again.


Step 9: Enjoy!

As you know we’ve been away in the camper over the Jubilee, Jamie is racing. Despite this, we wanted to be festive. Oz and I baked gingerbread last week before we left and then we decorated it when we got here. (What else does one do in a camper in the rain?)

We haven’t tried decorating biscuits like this before. We used the cookie cutters on thinly rolled ready roll and stuck them to the top of the biscuits. Later on I piped the rest.

Here’s Oz doing the cutting out. (I wrapped the camper table with cling film which turns out to be a top tip for easy clean up!)

I’m blogging this mainly for amusement value. They weren’t exactly sucessful! Oz did enjoy doing it though and it turned out to be much more of a sensory activity than I had planned. (not really in a good way)

So I saw some cute and easy looking marshmallow crispie Mickey Ears over at Mrs Fox’s Sweets. She has a very cool and inspiring blog and this looked like something that was actually in our league to make.

We followed the recipe, and spread the goo out on a tray in the fridge. It took several hours to ‘harden’ enough to cut out with cookie cutters. We discovered they needed to be really bold cookie shapes, only the stars we did were really recognisable. The mix was sooooo sticky and kinda spongey underneath. (That was several hand washes and wipings for Oz mid cutting and eventually a disgusted “I’ll watch you Mummy!” At least he tried. He also tasted one against his better judgement.)

They were returned to the fridge in the vain hope of hardening. Two days later we added choclate and sprinkles. That was very sensory! The stars were okay on top but soooo spongey and squidgey underneath.

Everything styuck to everything else. and a lot of things got stuck to Oscar. Much handwashing but also some tasting anbd joining in which has to be good, right?

I’m thinking it’s to do with the difference in marshmallow consistency between the UK and USA. Maybe more experimenting is required? Any one have a good UK based recipe to compare?????

(I learnt at WI that a biscuit is cut out and a cookie is formed, also biscuits snap and cookies break, so I’m pretty sure these are biscuits even though I want to call them cookies!)

I made the dough for these so that Oz and a friend could make biscuits for a playdate. In the end it was so sunny and lovely that we did an obstacle course in the garden instead. So There was me on a random Monday morning making biscuits for no reason except to use up the dough!

I decided to play with some new cutters that we hadn’t tried yet. The snail (or is it a whale?) and hedgehog are Ikea and the elephant came from the Christmas Market in Cologne/Koeln. (I think Der Markt der Engel if it matters, they have the best cutter stall there…)

When I came to decorate I realised I had no brown food coloring. So I did some experimentation with piping with chocolate. It worked great and was actually less hassle that making and colouring icing. Here’s what I came up with:

The dark chocolate worked very well with the vanilla biscuits, and they aren’t as sweet as iced ones so I feel less bad about the number that we’ve all eaten!

Well a note about the carried away bits anyway!

I downloaded some really cool pirate cupcake printables from www.cottage-industrialist.com. So even though there was birthday cake I had to use them!

Then of course there was the Jelly! (That’s Jello for the over-the-pond peeps!)

Now I had seen blue jelly with fish in all over blogland. Problem is you can’t buy it here. (The UK is on an anti food colouring kick, which I generally approve of, but not in this instance!!) The Lovely laura posted me some however so we were back in business! The all-natural sweeties I put in it didn’t hold their shape too well, they kind of absorbed the jelly. They were the only ones I could get fish shaped. Maybe one needs e-number filled sweeties too? I added printed pirate ships to the outside of the cups to ‘sail’ on the ‘sea’. (Yes, okay Rob, they might technically be spanish galleons but no-one noticed shhhh!)
