So what else is afoot in the great outdoors?

birdfeeder

Miss Emily and Friends spent a considerable amount of time this weekend threading cheerios onto pipecleaners.

It’s good for fine motor control and, when hung up in the garden, the birds think it’s yummy.

I do remain a little sceptical about what will happen when it rains though.

If we did it again we would try to get some duller coloured pipecleaners as daddy thinks the brights are ugly (and he’s not wrong). I guess I’ve created a chore for myself as once they are empty, one way or another, I’ll have to go and collect them. Will let you know if the birds actually eat them!

We also planted seeds. Yes, quite possibly they won’t survive, but we planted them anyway!

We filled some seed trays with sieved earth that Oscar has been digging out of his race track site (I’ll show you when he has finished but there’s nothing to see yet). Actually the sieving was a fun activity in itself, must remember to provide an earthy digging area with sieves and trowels and stuff once the rest of the earth works are sorted and there are no spots left for the kids to casually dig in.

Seed packets were read and small fingers planted. This may not sound much to you, but its huge progress in our sensory defensive household.

There was a little disappointment the next morning when nothing had grown. I blame pepper pig and her amazing overnight vegetables for that!

I might even keep you updated on sprouting progress if we manage to keep anything alive!

We planted 4 types of sunflower, peppers, chillies, tomatoes, chives, basil, rocket and something called spicy Chinese leaves. So presumably *something* will grow!

I have no clue where we will plant any of it if it survives!

Earlier in the holidays we tried out scavenger hunts. We are really happy with the space in our new big garden, even if Daddy says its a lot of mowing!

First I wrote a scavenger hunt for the kids. (Yes, Miss Emily does have clothes, you’ll have to excuse her state of undress, potty training you understand!)

There was a flurry of activity, trying to be the first to find everything on the list…

Then the boys got all excited with the whole idea and ran with it. They each wrote me a scavenger hunt of items to find. I love it when they run with what we are doing. 🙂

Yes, we do have a cement mixer to spot!!!

We aren’t really sure if this is art or an experiment! An Artiment maybe?

I clocked the melted crayon art all over the blogisphere a bit back but was unable to do much with the information, living in drizzly Sussex. This year however Summer started with avengence and so we decided to try it. I dug out thye bag of old crayons that we saved so make lego crayons (I really do intyend to get around to that one day) and headed for the garden. It was about 30 degrees (centigrade).

We cut the crayons into small pieces…

and made our designs on mini canvases.

We left them in the sun and waited….

and waited…

so the next day we put them on a metal tray in the sun…

The tray got very hot and the crayons got soft but didn’t melt.

we thoiught about where might be even hotter. We’re pretty sure that the inside of Daddy’s car is hotter than the surface of the sun so we tried in there…

bingo!!!!

Not as pretty as some, but definately a good discovery activity!

We all need some right?

recycled art rocket boosters

rerecycled art rocket boosters

Here’s what you need:

(although I wouldn’t say the swim shorts were essential!)

recycled art rocket boosters

The first 2 bottles were sprayed with silver paint (thank you 99p store Christmas Range!) but Oscar’s friends wanted some too and I hadn’t prepped any more bottles.

The should straps are that scooby doo cord stuff purely because that’s what I had to hand, other string typoe product would be fine. (Note the essential addition of a cup of tea!)

We added some silver tape to make them more rocket boostery. Shhh don’t tell Daddy!

Oscar’s have crepe paper flames too, but this was the quick version!

I really must take better pix. Too busy doing I guess, which isn’t such a bad thing. Oz made butterflies for his teachers at the end of term. It’s a peg, beads, glue gun and some pipe cleaners. I have seen the idea all over blogland. I even have a pin for a similar one. On the day of course I just made it up as I went along. (As you do!)
