My other main project this week has been a Christmas Stocking for Daniel. His Mum, Debbie, bought a nice felt stocking for Daniel’s older brother a couple of years ago, but she can’t find a similar one for Daniel. Those familiar words just slipped out… I can make that! while I was at it I added Matthew’s name to his stocking too.
I don’t think I did a bad job!
I didn’t want them to be the same, just look like they belonged together!
Here’s the how to:
You will need:
0.5m (about 0.5 yards ish) Red felt (or fleece)
10cm (4″) white fleece
other christmasssy felt colours
white rik rak
various colours embroidery thread
various buttons and embellishments
And here’s what I did:
Cut out 2 stocking shapes and enough 10cm wide fleece to go around the top.
Next work out what you are going to decorate with and cut the shapes from felt and work out the layout.
Now hand stitch the shapes on. You could also use a machine, but I prefer the hanbd sewn look. (and poor Debbie didn’t get a choice!
The next step is to pin and macjhine sew the rik rak in place.
Now the machine stitching is done on the front you can add the bumpy embellishments (eg buttons) that might have got in the way of machining. Embellish away to your hearts content!
Once you are finished, put the right sides of the stocking togther, pin and stich around the edge.
Now hem the bottom edge of the white stocking top. (This isn’t actually necessary as it’s fleece or felt but it looks a bit neater!)
Next pin the stocking to around so the RIGHT side of the top faces the WRONG side of the stocking (trust me on this one!) Also pin up the edge of the stocking top. (Sorry for the fuzzy photo, it’s too late now!)
Gently pull the edge (picture on the left here) of the stocking away from the stocking top so it doesn’t get caught in the stitching, and sew up the side of the stocking top. (I hope that makes sense I don’t know how else to say it!)
Now re settle the stocking and sew the top to the stocking.
Just turn it the right way out and you’re done!
All I added was Daniel’s name!

I love the stocking – very cute and they definitely do look like they belong together.
Hand-made stockings are the best! You make it look so easy in the photos…one day I’ll get brave enough to give real sewing a try, thanks for the tutorial!
